Root cellars are underground storage facilities dug into the earth to maintain ideal temperatures for produce storage, such as brick, stone or concrete construction or sod based. Key elements for success in creating an effective root cellar include temperature, humidity and ventilation – with cooler night air sinking into the soil while warmer daytime air rises up, creating an ideal atmosphere for produce storage – something Dorothy’s family took advantage of during The Wizard of Oz movie!

Root cellar was constructed at Heart Mountain Camp’s agriculture program in 1943 by Japanese American prisoners incarcerated at Heart Mountain and stands as a lasting monument of their achievement in turning barren desert into fertile farmland.

Funding from the National Park Service and Aratani Foundation allows us to commence restoration of the cellar. Earth moving and clearing begin immediately while our crew begins preparing the underground structure for rehabilitation.

Concrete is poured to form an ADA-accessible ramp and entrance pathway into the cellar, and a new roof is constructed. Damaged rafter logs are repaired or replaced as necessary, with insulation added underneath to provide wind and weather protection until full restoration work can resume.
